Upgrading a legacy code from AeroDyn14 to AeroDyn15

Hello,

I’m using a code that is based on the legacy AeroDyn v14 (FAST coupled with a CFD solver) and want to upgrade to AeroDyn15. I am mainly interested in the differences in coordinate systems.

For AeroDyn v15, I know that the coordinate systems are documented online. For AeroDyn v14, what is the authoritative reference for the coordinate systems. Is the 2005 FAST User’s Guide the right source? Also, is there a document that lists the coordinate system changes from v14 to v15.

I appreciate your help.

Best regards,

Y.Thiziri

Dear @Yoor.Thiziri,

AeroDyn v14, like its predecessors, was generally limited to straight blades and structural motions were not handled consistently in all aerodynamic terms.

Appendix F from the AeroDyn v15 User’s Guide and Theory Manual, which formed the original basis of the AeroDyn documentation on OpenFAST readthedocs, provides a high-level overview of the changes between AeroDyn v14 and v15, but does not dive deeply into the coordinate systems (https://www.nrel.gov/docs/libraries/wind-docs/aerodyn-manual.pdf?sfvrsn=51d961db_1).

To understand the coordinate systems used by AeroDyn v14 and its predecessors, I would suggest reviewing the old AeroDyn User’s Guide from AeroDyn v12.50 (https://www.nrel.gov/docs/libraries/wind-docs/aerodyn.pdf?sfvrsn=86abc14f_1) and the the document that describes subsequent updates to AeroDyn before v15 was released (https://www.nrel.gov/docs/libraries/wind-docs/userguideaddendum-aerodyn.pdf?sfvrsn=5f658c2a_1).

Best regards,
