How fine should a TurbSim mesh be?

Hello,

I’m wondering if there is any sort of rule of thumb for “how fine” a TurbSim mesh should be. I know the total grid size is determined by my rotor (1.1*RotDiam for onshore turbines), but I’m wondering what values are good for the number of grid points. Has anyone done a sensitivity study on this?

Cheers,

Jenni

Dear Jenni,

The TurbSim documentation recommends selecting a grid width equal to the mean chord of the blade, which was based on prior sensitivity studies. However, I have not personally seen the results of such a sensitivity study and this grid width is often hard to achieve for large multi-megawatt turbines, especially floating offshore turbines that require larger grids. I am curious if others have published data on such sensitivity studies and came up with the same or different conclusions.

Best regards,
