ERROR RUNNING FASTV8

Hello, I have been trying to run FASTv8 in my computer and I keep getting the message on the image attached below.
I had no problem running FASTv7 but v8 always produces the following message.
Can you give me a suggestion as how to deal with this problem?

Dear Anastasia,

FAST is complaining that the primary input file is not formatted properly. Did you upgrade your FAST v7 input files for compatibility with FAST v8? What do the first few lines of your primary input file look like?

It looks like you are trying to run the NREL 5-MW turbine atop the OC3-monopile. A complete FAST v8 model of this system is available as Test19 in the FAST v8 CertTest.

Best regards,

Dear Jason,

You are right I am trying to run the NREL 5-MW turbine atop the OC3-monopile but I didn’t know that the input files I had were not compatible with FAST v8 but it looks like this is the problem.
Below I have attached the first lines of the primary input file that I have.

So in order to run FAST v8 do I have to format only the primary input file (*.fst) according to Test19 in the FAST v8 CertTes or the rest of the input files also need to be properly formatted?

Best regards,
Anastasia

Dear Anastasia,

Your input file is definitely not compatible with FAST v8. Most of the input files have changed between FAST v7 and FAST v8. See the ReadMe file provided with FAST v8 for information on the input file changes and MATLAB scripts available to convert input files between different versions. However, if you want to use the OC3-monopile as specified, you can find this as Test19 in the FAST v8 CertTest (this model is already compatible with FAST v8).

Best regards,

All of the input files need to be modified for FAST v8.

There are some MATLAB scripts in the FAST v8 archive that can help you with the file conversion (see the “MATLAB Conversion Scripts” section of the FAST v8 ReadMe file: wind.nrel.gov/nwtc/docs/README_FAST8.pdf), or as Jason mentioned, you can start with Test19’s input files and modify as necessary.

Dear Jason and Bonnie,

thank you very much for your answers, they have been very helpful and enlightening and I have already managed to run FAST V8.

There is only one more thing that I would like to ask because I am a liitle bit confused;
does Test19 in the FAST v8 CertTest folder (OC3-monipile) refer to rigid or to a flexible foundation?

In the input file ‘NRELOffshrBsline5MW_OC3Monopile_ElastoDyn.dat’ it is written in the 1st line: “NREL 5.0 MW offshore baseline monopile tower for flexible monopile modeled in SubDyn”.

Best regards,

Dear Anastasia,

The OC3-monopile model provided with FAST v8, Test19 in the CertTest, considers a flexible turbine and tower (in ElastoDyn), a flexible substructure/monopile (in SubDyn), but a rigid foundation – i.e., the monopile is cantilevered to the rigid seabed 20-m below mean sea level.

I hope that helps.

Best regards,

Dear Jason,

your explanation is very helpful and clarified the issue.

Thank you very much for all your help.

Best regards,
