Last month, I began working on my master’s thesis in the field of floating wind energy. My research focuses on comparing multiple floater concepts for the IEA 15 MW reference turbine in terms of their performance with respect to energy yield. I am about to run some simulations with OpenFAST, using both aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forcing.
In the papers “Definition of the Floating System for Phase IV of OC3” (2010, Jonkman) and “Definition of the Semisubmersible Floating System for Phase II of OC4” (2014, Robertson, Jonkman and Masciola), you define eight sea states (from 1 = mild to 8 = extreme). I was wondering if you could provide some guidance on what these sea states are based. For my research, I am looking to establish a representative list of load cases for comparing the different floaters.
