Redesign of mooring for OC4 as taut system

Dear Dr. Jonkman,

As I am trying to modify the available OC4 DeepCwind mooring codes in order to model it as a taut system, I want to ask several questions.

  1. Is the mooring analysis module such as MoorDyn or FEAMooring only thing I need to take account on to reflect the change of mooring system? (Assuming same water depth as 200m).

  2. If yes, would it need a complete redesign of cable properties besides changing the positions of fairlead and anchor?

Thank you so much for your time.

All the best,

Leo

Dear Leo,

While you would definitely have to change the mooring properties in the mooring module, If the mooring pretension of the taut system is much greater than that of the catenary system, you may need to increase the volume or decrease the mass/ballast of the floating platform (e.g. in HydroDyn) to maintain the vertical position of the floating platform under still-water conditions.

If the mooring tension of the taut system is much greater than that of the catenary system, I would expect the mooring line properties to change as well.

I hope that helps.

Best regards,
