BROADEN REGION 2 for NREL 5-MW OFFSHORE MODEL

Dear all,

I would like to ask whether I could broaden operational region 2 and how? Because for my research the speed range 871~1161.96 rpm is too narrow, I would like to increase the upper limit. I have already reduced the lower limit to 700 rpm. Now I do not consider whether it is practical to broaden region 2 as I only need to carry out theoretical analysis using this model.

Dear Xin,

You can’t increase the upper limit of speed in Region 2 for the NREL 5-MW turbine without bumping up against the rated speed of 1173.7 rpm. This limit was specified to limit tip speed (80 m/s maximum) and hence noise emissions. It would be unrealistic to increase this speed limit without a structural/aerodynamic redesign of the rotor, which itself would require changes to the rest of the turbine design.
