WEIS Floating Platform – Geometry Overlaps and Member Connections

Dear Community,

I am currently trying to model a floating platform using the WEIS/WISDEM interface. When reviewing the geometry file using the visualization tool, I noticed that some structural parts appear to overlap or intersect (as shown in the attached image).

I was wondering whether, in the case of mass or hydrostatic calculations, the software accounts for overlapping surfaces or if these regions are trimmed automatically. Should I manually adapt the diameter and thickness of the overlapping parts to avoid this? Is there a way to create rigid type connections between members?

Thank you for your help!

Adele

Yes, the intersections should be accounted for in WEIS. The visualization just plots each structural member one by one, so there is no elegant handling of the intersection. As a preprocessor for the rest of WEIS, WISDEM will remove the intersection volume of one of the members from the inertial and hydrostatic summations. The meshing for pyHAMS is also sophisticated enough to accommodate the intersection such that any hydrodynamic properties that are computed for RAFT and OpenFAST are also accurate.
