ElastoDyn handeling of Input TMassDen

Dear all,

I`m facing issues with defining pointmasses for the tower in ElastoDyn. I included these Pointmasses as higher value for TMassDen but the summary from ElastoDyn shows different values.
In ElastoDyn I defined 62 sections. In the summary there are 20 sections.
Can you give a hint how these values are handled or how pointmasses can be defined in tower and blade.

Best regards,
Simon

Dear Simon,

Please note that in ElastoDyn there both tower analysis nodes and stations used to define tower sectional data. Input TwrNodes determines the number of analysis nodes used for the integration of the elastic and inertia forces of the tower. Input NTwInpSt defines the number of stations used to define the tower sectional data in the tower input file. For example, if the tower is uniform, only one section needs be defined, so you may set NTwInpSt to 1. However, increasing TwrNodes always results in a more accurate integration of the elastic and inertia forces, at the expense of slowing down the simulation. Typically, TwrNodes should be chosen in the range of 10-20. ElastoDyn will always interpolate the table of input sectional data (defined by NTwInpSt) to the locations of the analysis nodes (defined by TwrNodes). So, it is not really possible to define true point masses along the tower in ElastoDyn.

Best regards,

Dear Jason,

did I got you right, that it is not possible to define point masses in ElastoDyn?
How are you defining additional masses for flanges or internals?
Is there a different option that allows the definition of point masses for tower and or blade?

Best regards,
Simon

Dear Simon,

You can always place additional mass at specific tower or blade analysis nodes in ElastoDyn by proper specification of the distributed mass (taking into consideration how ElastoDyn will interpolate the distributed mass to the analysis nodes), but it is not as easy as specifying specific point masses at specific locations.

Best regards,
