Wind Speed and Wave Parameter Adjustments in Wind Turbine Modeling problem with mooring lines

Hi
I am working on a TLP-based wind turbine model and trying to increase the wind speed. When I set the wind speed to 45 m/s, the simulation runs fine. However, when I adjust the wave height and period accordingly (based on a paper that suggests 15 for both), I get an error related to the mooring lines, saying that their length is too large.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue? What would be the best way to properly adjust the wave height and period for high wind speeds in such cases?

Dear @Anis.Ziamehr,

The mooring model of FAST v7 is a quasi-static catenary model, which can trigger an error (as you reporting) if the tendon of a TLP gets too slack. That said, tendons of a TLP should be designed to avoid going slack, so, this error is likely pointing out that the sea state you are using is too severe for the TLP design you are simulating or that the TLP needs to be redesign to support the sea state severity.

Just curious: Is there a reason you are using the old FAST v7 software when the newer OpenFAST software is much more capable? I suggest upgrading to OpenFAST, unless there is a strong reason to use the old software.

Best regards,

Dear Professor Jonkman,

Hello
Thanks a lot for your response
it was really helpful
Honestly, this topic had been one of my big questions for a while.
And yes, I know I’ve been spending a lotof time with Fast7 ,But I promise, it’s not lifelong commitmen
the thing is I submitted an abstract for a conference, so I’m still working with it for now. Once the conference is over, I’ll be moving on to OpenFAST for my future work.

Thanks again for your help
I really appreciate it

Best regards

Dear Professor Jonkman
Hi again

One more request :folded_hands:
You have been an ideal role model for me in the field of wind turbine design, and I’ve followed your encouragement to start working with OpenFAST. I’ve prepared the necessary files, but I need some guidance for the initial modeling process.

Do you have any papers or reference files that provide specifications for a complete turbine model? I’d like to use them as a benchmark to replicate your results and ensure both OpenFAST’s accuracy and my own understanding of the process.

I truly appreciate your time and any resources you can share.

Best regards

Dear @Anis.Ziamehr,

I’m not sure I fully understand your question, but the land-based version of the NREL 5-MW baseline wind turbine is well documented in its specifications report: https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy09osti/38060.pdf and you can find the equivalent OpenFAST model in the r-test: r-test/glue-codes/openfast/5MW_Land_DLL_WTurb at main · OpenFAST/r-test · GitHub. There are also documents and OpenFAST models of the same turbine atop different offshore support structures (fixed bottom and floating).
