Query regarding Mean wind speed in FF TurbSim file

Hello Everybody,

I am a PhD student working on coupling FAST with our in-house CFD code. I am thinking of writing the wind velocities from the CFD into a full-field TurbSim binary file which can be executed by FAST (Aerodyn) to provide the forces.
The mean wind speed at hub height (mffws) is a scalar in the FF file. Could you please confirm the use/purpose of this scalar?
My understanding is that it is used as a convection velocity for the planes (YZ) which have the u,v,w velocities.

Hi, Anshul.

Yes, the MFFWS value in the TurbSim binary files is used to propogate the 3-D turbulence box in time.

If it’s useful, I have some Fortran code that you can modify to generate TurbSim binary files (.wnd or .bts).
